A blog requires a lot of content to for long-term running so pick something in which you are an expert or familiar.

Further, if you think that you can write on multiple topics, you can write them using different categories.

A domain is a web address. It is basically the URL of your website. For examples: google.com, facebook.com.
There are many domain service providers. Some hosting providers like Bluehost provide free domain with their hosting packages. You can also purchase a domain from others as well. Keep in mind that always purchase the domain form site you trust. And remember, pick a catchy domain name. If already have domain than that’s great you just need to point hosting name server to your domain from domain panel.

Quick tips for choosing a domain name:

  • Make it easy to remember and easy to share.
  • Go with the appropriate extension that suits your business. Extensions are suffix such as .com, .org, .info, .net, etc. at the end of the web address.
  • Use KISS formula (Keep it Short and Simple). Avoid hyphens, numbers, obscure terms or confusing words.
  • Catchy and Memorable domains are always appreciated. Make sure your visitors will come back again and again.

Note: if you are a serious blogger, do not go for free hosted domains like Blogspot or WordPress.com domains.

If you want to travel, you need a vehicle. If you want to blog, you need a blogging platform. Webutter recommends WordPress. It is by far the most popular blogging platform. We don’t want to waste your time discussing another platform. You can get a clear idea after reading our previous blog. Why should you use WordPress? It’s easy to use, flexible and has a large community of people who share tools and ideas. You might get confused on wordpress.com and WordPress.org. We recommend WordPress.org a self-hosted platform due to its flexibility and more control. You can easily install WordPress from cPanel.

5. Essential Setting After Installing WordPress.

Remove Dummy Content: By default, WordPress already create some dummy content in your blog. Delete them before writing your blog.  Some sample contents are Sample Comment in the comment section, Sample Post on the post section, Sample Page on-page section, Hello Dolly Plugin in the plugins section.

Change The Title, Tagline, Time and Date: You should change your Site Title and Tagline if you have set tagline in your mind. Don’t forget to change time and date according to your location/requirement. After making all the changes, click ‘Save Changes’. To do that, go to Settings -> General.

Configure the Reading Settings: By default, WordPress will show the blog posts on your homepage. If you want to show a custom home page and assign another page for the blog posts, you need to make some changes. First of all, create two new pages titled ‘Home’ and ‘Blog’. Then, go to Settings -> Reading. In the ‘Front page displays’ option, choose ‘A static page‘.

Change your Permalinks Structure: To change the default permalink structure, go to Settings -> Permalinks. In the resulting page, you will find different permalink structures. We prefer the ‘Post Name’ structure. This is best for SEO

Add New Categories: As we have discussed if you can write in multiple topics or if your topic is divided into multiple categories than you can add categories. To create a new category, go to the post editor and find out the meta box titled ‘Categories’.

6. Install theme of your need/choice.

Now you all you need to do is pick a WordPress theme. We can find loads and loads of free theme in the WordPress theme repository. You can easily download them. Or if think that free theme does not meet your requirements then can also download premium themes from reliable places like Themeforest, CreativeMarket. They don’t cost more than $60. But be sure that premium theme meets your requirements before purchasing them.

By default new installation of WordPress comes with three themes – Twenty Fifteen, Twenty Fourteen and Twenty Thirteen. You will find the themes in the Appearance -> Themes page.

Once you have chosen your theme, download the theme file on your computer. Then, go to Appearance -> Themes and click ‘Add New’. Click ‘Upload Theme’, upload the theme and then activate it. If you find the theme in the WordPress repository then you can directly install without downloading.

Plugins are one of the main reasons for WordPress’ popularity. Installing WordPress plugins, allows you to do almost anything with your WordPress site. They control the behavior of the site. While the necessary plugins will vary depending on your website type. Like WordPress, themes plugins can also be installed in the same way.
